Squirrel monkeys have the largest brain-to-body-mass ratio of any monkey — about 1:17, roughly twice the human proportion. They are small, hyperactive New World primates that live in some of the biggest troops of any Neotropical monkey, sometimes exceeding 100 animals.

Appearance

Short olive or grey-green fur, bright yellow-orange limbs, a white mask around the eyes and a black muzzle give squirrel monkeys their nickname “dead head” monkey in parts of South America. The shape of the white brow arch is the standard way to tell the Central American and Amazonian groups apart.

Diet and foraging

Squirrel monkeys are insectivore-frugivores. They spend hours working through leaf clusters, bromeliads and curled dead leaves hunting grasshoppers, caterpillars, spiders and beetles, then top up energy on small soft fruits and nectar. Because they are small and fast-metabolising, they must feed almost constantly. This puts them at the opposite end of the spectrum from the leaf-eating howler monkey. Troop life

Large troops give safety in numbers against hawks, eagles, snakes and small cats. Females and their young form the stable core; males become fully integrated mainly in the short annual breeding season, during which they undergo “fatting” — a testosterone-driven bulking of the shoulders and torso that makes them look dramatically larger for a few weeks.

Habitat

They prefer the middle canopy of lowland rainforest, especially riverside and secondary growth where insect density is high.
