The four ways monkeys move in trees

Arboreal quadrupedalism

Leaping

Why not just walk on the ground?

Some monkeys do. Baboons, patas monkeys, geladas and many macaques are largely terrestrial, and they compensate with large group sizes, cooperative defence and sleeping cliffs or tall trees at night. But for small-bodied species, the ground is lethal: a 700-gram squirrel monkey on the forest floor is prey for almost everything. The canopy is also a continuous highway in intact forest, so travel is direct rather than detoured around obstacles.

What happens when the canopy breaks
