The Basic Job: Balance in Three Dimensions
Most monkey tails work as a counterweight. Prehensile Tails: The Fifth Limb
A true prehensile tail, one that can grip and support full body weight, evolved in only one group of monkeys: the atelids of Central and South America, which include spider monkeys, howler monkeys, woolly monkeys and muriquis. Their tails carry extra muscle, unusually mobile vertebrae, and a bare patch of skin on the underside covered in ridges and sweat glands, essentially a fingerprint without a finger. That naked pad grips bark so securely that a spider monkey can hang from it while both hands strip fruit from a branch tip too thin to stand on.
Capuchins have a semi-prehensile tail: strong enough to wrap a branch and steady the body, but without the bare gripping pad, and not reliable enough for a full hanging suspension. Why Only South American Monkeys Grip With Their Tails
The answer is partly about competition. South American forests have no apes and no large climbing carnivores in the canopy, so monkeys there evolved to feed at the flimsy outer edges of trees where the best fruit hangs. A gripping tail turns those unstable terminal branches into usable feeding stations. Old World monkeys instead evolved powerful hind limbs, narrow chests and confident quadrupedal running along larger boughs, along with cheek pouches for grabbing food quickly. Tails as Social Signals
Tails also talk. Vervets and many guenons carry the tail in a distinctive raised curve that helps group members follow each other through dense vegetation, and a sharp change in tail posture can accompany alarm. In several macaques the tail is held stiff and high in confident, dominant animals and pressed low in submissive ones. Monkeys With Almost No Tail
Tail length shrinks in species that spend most of the day on the ground, where balance on branches no longer matters. The Barbary macaque, Europe only free-living monkey, has a tail so small it is often mistaken for an ape, and stump-tailed and Japanese macaques have short stubs. Long tails cost energy to grow, are vulnerable to frostbite in cold climates and can be grabbed by predators, so where the benefit disappears the tail reduces. What Tails Do Not Do
Some persistent claims are wrong. Monkey tails are not used to swing along like a rope for long distances, they cannot be regrown if lost, and no monkey has a tail with a hand or claw at the tip.
