Monkeys are generalists with a set of specialist upgrades. Take away any one of them and the primate way of life becomes impossible: grasping hands, forward-facing eyes, flexible shoulders, big brains and a digestive system tuned to a particular diet.

Hands, Feet and Grip

Opposable thumbs and big toes turn a limb into a clamp, allowing monkeys to move confidently along branches and to manipulate food with precision. Nails instead of claws give a broad tactile fingertip. Marmosets are the exception that proves the rule: they evolved claw-like nails to cling to vertical trunks while gouging bark for gum.

The Prehensile Tail

Only some New World monkeys, notably spider, howler and woolly monkeys, evolved a tail that can support the whole body. The underside carries a hairless gripping pad rich in nerve endings, effectively a fifth hand. Vision

Forward-facing eyes give overlapping fields of view and therefore accurate depth perception, essential when the next handhold is three metres away. Most Old World monkeys have full trichromatic colour vision, useful for spotting ripe fruit and young leaves against green. Many New World species are polymorphic, with some individuals seeing three colours and others two, and the nocturnal owl monkey traded colour for enormous light-gathering eyes, as described in nocturnal monkeys.

Digestive Specialisation

Diet drives anatomy. Colobus monkeys and langurs carry multi-chambered, fermenting stomachs that let them live on mature leaves, whereas fruit specialists have simple guts and short retention times. Marmosets have enlarged caecums to ferment tree gum, and gum-gouging incisors to obtain it. Cheek Pouches and Sitting Pads

Macaques and baboons can stuff food into cheek pouches and process it later in safety, a neat solution to competition at a food source. Old World monkeys also have ischial callosities, tough sitting pads that make sleeping upright on a branch or ledge comfortable through the night.

Coping With Cold

Japanese macaques grow dense winter coats, huddle in groups and bathe in hot springs; snub-nosed monkeys carry heavy fur and switch to lichen and bark when snow buries everything else. These adaptations allow primates to live where no tropical species could, an extreme discussed in Asian monkeys.

Not every adaptation is anatomical.
